Wheelchair Accessible Swing Launched at Keurboom Park
Keurboom Park unveils its first wheelchair accessible swing, marking a major milestone in creating inclusive play spaces for all children. This achievement, funded by the Rotary Club of Newlands, is just the beginning of exciting accessibility improvements planned for the park.

On Thursday, 27 November 2025, Keurboom Park celebrated a momentous occasion with the official unveiling of its first wheelchair accessible swing. Located in the heart of the park under the shade of beautiful trees, this new facility represents a significant step forward in making our community park truly accessible to all children, regardless of their mobility needs.
A Community Vision Realized
The wheelchair accessible swing is the result of a dedicated three-year project spearheaded by Wendy Goddard, whose vision has been to create inclusive play spaces where children of all abilities can play together. This achievement demonstrates what can be accomplished when community members work together toward a shared goal of accessibility and inclusion.
The project was made possible through generous funding from the Rotary Club of Newlands, whose commitment to community development has transformed this vision into reality.
Craftsmanship and Design
The swing was expertly built by Kenneth Rhode, a skilled craftsman who came out of retirement specifically for this meaningful project. His dedication to quality and attention to detail are evident in every aspect of the swing's construction.
Key Features
The wheelchair accessible swing has been thoughtfully designed with safety and accessibility as top priorities:
- Fold-down ramp for easy wheelchair access
- Safety bars and rails to ensure secure seating
- Robust construction capable of carrying approximately 200 kilograms
- Shaded location under trees for comfort during use
- Central park positioning making it easily accessible to all visitors
A Joyful First Experience
The honor of being the first child to experience the new swing went to Ra'naa Ayub, whose joy and excitement perfectly captured the importance of this facility to children who can now fully participate in the simple pleasure of swinging at the park.
