KEURBOOM PARK ASSOCIATION
MINUTES OF COMMITTEE MEETING NO 62
Held on Monday 25 August 2025 at 19 Chesham Road, Claremont

APOLOGIES: Jonathan Sydow
2. MATTERS ARISING
2.1 FINANCIAL
At 25 August 2025 the KPA bank balances were R24,619 (Current), and R231,675 (FNB FlexiNotice). Commitments include +- R13,000.00 monthly for gardener's wages and commitments for the restio garden, pond, borehole, stream banks and beds which amount to R204,000.00
For the convenience of park users who would like to donate, the KP bank account is:
Keurboom Park Association, FNB Branch 201509 Account no. 62213629530
2.2 GRASS CUTTING IN THE PARK
Our park employees are cutting selected areas and a new contractor cut the grass in early August and will do so again in November. Some areas are deliberately left wild to encourage pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
2.3 PICNIC BENCHES
A picnic bench for disabled park users is in the pipeline, to be sponsored by Newlands Rotary. Phil to follow up.
2.4 DAMS
After an impasse of some months the permanent dam in the north east corner is again under discussion with our local councillor Richard Hill. A CoCT hydrological survey apparently indicates too little available underground water in this area. We hope to have access to the survey in order to make further plans.
2.5 RESTIO GARDEN
Further planting in the restio garden has been delayed pending the new pond. We are looking for more unusual restios if anyone can help.
2.6 MANHOLE COVERS
Phil will install replacement manhole covers behind the toilets. New resilient manhole covers are also required along the new pink path.
2.7 PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT
Rotary and Lions have offered a swing for special needs children. Planning is in progress. City Parks renovated the slide and added rubber mats. The merry-go-round is out of action. Justine to follow up.
2.8 WATER TESTING
Phil will test the water after the rains once the dams are full.
2.9 PARK LABOUR
We are continuing to employ three gardeners, Kenneth, Daniel and Jimmy, for the foreseeable future.
2.10 MOBILE VENDORS IN THE PARK
Arise and Grind in their position on RBHS property is extremely popular and an asset to the park. CoCT has proposed four MTAs (Mobile Trading Area's) along Squirrel's Way which the KP committee has vetoed.
2.11 CALENDARS
Photographic submissions for the 2026 calendar are closed.
2.12 MASTER PLAN FOR KP
The committee has reminded the City to make progress with their proposed master plan for the park which will include upgrading the bike pump track. Phil to consult Luyanda.
2.13 TOILET ATTENDANTS PAID BY CITY
The toilet opening hours are 9-4pm on weekdays and 9-5pm on weekends.
2.14 CHAMELEONS
We believe our chameleons are being stolen. Park users are asked to report any evidence of this and to deter or discourage thieves if spotted. Contact Justine at 083 284 3388.
2.15 SWINGS
Swings have been vandalised. Kindly report any vandalism spotted. Thank you to Malcolm Riley for installing and fixing new swings.
3. NEW MATTERS
3.1 FROG WALKS
The frog walks will come to an end on 2 September.
3.2 BRIDGE HANDRAIL
Fay reported that park users have requested a handrail on the bridge next to Little Bosch.
3.3 OWL DEATHS
We have lost two owls. Both were found alive on the ground but ailing, were taken to vets and found to have ingested poisoned rats. How can we advise the public about safe alternatives to rat poison?
3.4 TREE PLANTING
Francois Krige of Krige Tree Services planted approx. 25 trees in Keurboom Park as an experiment to find out which trees will survive PHSB.
3.5 COMMUNITY MARKET
The GLCA have requested another community market in the park on 2 November.
The meeting ended at 20.00
The next meeting will be at 6pm on Monday 17th November 2025, at 19 Chesham Road, Claremont.
