Owl Security Features Project

Our innovative owl security project combines natural wildlife conservation with effective park security, creating a unique approach to community safety that has gained recognition throughout Cape Town.

The Inspiration Behind the Project

The idea came from observing our resident Spotted Eagle Owls and recognizing their natural territorial behavior. Rather than installing expensive electronic security systems, we decided to work with nature to create a self-sustaining security solution.

The Owl Security Concept

Keurboom Park is home to several pairs of Spotted Eagle Owls, magnificent birds of prey that naturally deter unwanted activities during evening hours. Our project works to:

Protect and enhance natural owl nesting sites
Install strategic owl perches throughout the park
Use the presence of these apex predators as natural security
Educate the community about our resident owl population
Create a harmonious balance between human use and wildlife conservation

Project Implementation

Habitat Enhancement

Installed 6 custom-built owl nesting boxes in strategic locations
Created quiet zones around known nesting areas
Planted native vegetation to support the owls' prey ecosystem
Established lighting guidelines to minimize disturbance
Built elevated perches for hunting and territorial display
